Why one school contract in five gets a single bid
Across the country, about one real school contract in five draws a single bid or none at all. In some states and some kinds of work it is far worse.
A single bid sounds convenient for the school. It is not. When the auditor asks why the price was fair, “nobody else answered” is a weak answer, and the district carries that risk for the whole contract.
A thin bid list is not a lack of firms. It is a lack of introductions.
The firms exist. Many of them bid on a school down the road last spring and lost. They have the crew, the certifications and the paperwork. They are simply not looking at this school, this week.
So the useful move is small: find the firm that already does this work, show it the open request before the signing date, and step aside. The school gets a real comparison. The firm gets another shot.
